Staves, systems and tab
A musical staff (or stave) has five lines and four spaces; notes are placed on them to show pitch. Standard manuscript paper carries 10 to 12 staves per page. Fewer, larger staves suit beginners and children, while 12 staves suit piano music written as paired treble and bass staves.
Guitar tablature uses six lines, one per string, with the lowest line standing for the low E string. The “TAB” mark printed at the start of each row is the conventional signal that numbers mean frets, not notes.
