How to Print Graph Paper at Actual Size

If your 1/4 inch squares measure a hair under 1/4 inch, the file is fine; the print dialog shrank it. Here is why it happens and the one setting that fixes it.

Fit to page shrinks every square

Most printers cannot put ink right up to the edge of the sheet; they leave an unprintable border of roughly 3–6 mm. When a PDF page is the full size of the paper, “Fit to page” (also called “Shrink oversized pages” or “Fit to printable area”) scales the whole page down so that nothing falls in that border. The grid stays square, but every cell gets smaller by the same percentage.

With Fit to page, each square prints at 5.98 mm (0.235 in) instead of 6.35 mm: that is 94.1%. Over 40 squares (10 in) the error adds up to 14.9 mm.

Print at 100% in common apps

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader: Page Sizing & Handling → Actual size.
  • Chrome and Edge: More settings → Scale → Default or Custom 100. Turn off “Fit to printable area”.
  • Firefox: Scale → 100% (not “Fit to page width”).
  • macOS Preview: Show Details → Scale 100%.
  • iPhone / iPad: Share → Print prints PDFs at full size; choose the right paper size.

GridForge keeps a 10 mm margin by default, wider than almost every printer’s unprintable edge, so printing at 100% never clips the grid. Print on the paper size you chose: an A4 PDF on Letter paper (or the reverse) forces the printer to scale or crop.

How the PDF keeps measurements exact

PDF measures everything in points, 72 to the inch, as defined in the PDF specification (ISO 32000). GridForge converts your square size to points (1 mm = 72 ÷ 25.4 ≈ 2.835 pt) and writes each line as a vector path, so there is no image resolution to lose. A 1/4 in square is exactly 18 pt; a 5 mm square is 14.173 pt.

Where is the “Actual size” option?

In Adobe Acrobat Reader it is under Page Sizing & Handling → Actual size. In Chrome’s print dialog open “More settings” and set Scale to Default or Custom 100. In macOS Preview set Scale to 100%. On iPhone and iPad, AirPrint prints PDFs at 100% by default.

Does GridForge set the PDF to print at actual size?

Yes. Each PDF includes the PrintScaling /None viewer preference, which asks PDF readers that honour it to default to no scaling. Some browsers ignore it, so check the dialog anyway.

My printer cuts off the edge of the grid. What should I do?

Increase the page margin in the settings to 10–13 mm. Most home printers cannot print within about 3–6 mm of the edge.

How do I check the printed size?

Measure ten squares with a ruler rather than one; a 1/4 in grid should span exactly 2.5 in (63.5 mm) across ten squares.
