Using number lines in class
A number line turns arithmetic into movement: adding is a hop to the right, subtracting a hop to the left. It is one of the first models children meet for place value and it carries straight on to negative numbers, fractions and decimals. Blank lines are useful for assessment: students write in the scale themselves, which shows whether they understand equal spacing.

Can I make a number line with negative numbers?
Yes. Set the start below zero, for example −10 to 10.
Can I make fraction or decimal number lines?
For decimals set the step to 0.1 or 0.5. For fractions, print blank ticks with the step you need (such as 8 steps from 0 to 1) and label them by hand.
How many number lines fit on a page?
Between 1 and 14. Eight is a good balance for worksheets.
