Graph paper sizes at a glance
Graph paper is described by square size or by squares per inch. These are the sizes people print most; each has its own page with presets tuned for it.
| Size | Squares | Metric | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4 inch | 4 squares per inch | 6.35 mm | The standard US school and quad-ruled notebook size. |
| 1/8 inch | 8 squares per inch | 3.175 mm | Fine grid for detailed floor plans, pixel art and small handwriting. |
| 1/2 inch | 2 squares per inch | 12.7 mm | Large squares for young learners, big hand-drawn charts and board-game prototypes. |
| 5 mm | 2 squares per centimetre | 5 mm | The standard squared-paper size across Europe. |
| 1 cm | 1 square per centimetre | 10 mm | Centimetre squares for primary maths: area, perimeter, bar charts and multiplication arrays. |
| 1 inch | 1 square per inch | 25.4 mm | Big one-inch squares for quilting plans, pattern drafting, early-years counting and large-scale room layouts where one square equals one foot. |
| A4 | 5 mm squares on A4 | 5 mm | Squared paper sized for A4, the standard sheet across Europe, Asia and Australia. |
| 1 mm | 10 squares per centimetre | 1 mm | Millimetre paper for accurate science plots. |
Why the preview has a ruler
Most printable graph paper sites show you a thumbnail and hope. GridForge draws the page from the same geometry that goes into the PDF and frames it with a centimetre and inch rule, so you can see that ten 1/4 in squares really span 2½ in before you print. The PDF is built in your browser with PostScript points (1/72 in) as the unit, which is how PDF measures everything, so a 5 mm square is exactly 14.17 points wide.
What goes wrong is usually the printer, not the file. Print dialogs default to shrinking pages to fit, which quietly turns 6.35 mm squares into about 6 mm. Our guide to printing at actual size has an interactive calculator that shows the error for your paper.
Need axes? Print a coordinate plane, a blank coordinate plane or first-quadrant graph paper. For metric sheets, A4 graph paper defaults to 5 mm squares.
Tips for better graph paper
- Choose a light colour. Pale blue or grey lines guide your pencil without competing with it. Dark grids are for drawings you will trace or cut.
- Use bold lines to count. A heavier line every 4 squares on 1/4 in paper marks inches; every 5 or 10 squares on metric paper makes counting fast.
- Print a pad, not a page. Set “Pages in PDF” up to 20 and you get a ready-to-staple pad in one file.
- Add a title. A heading such as “Unit 3 · Graphing linear equations” turns a blank grid into a worksheet.
Questions
Is this graph paper really free?
Yes. GridForge makes the PDF in your browser, so there is nothing to sell you: no watermark, no email, no account and no page limit beyond 20 pages per download.
How do I print graph paper at the right size?
In the print dialog choose “Actual size” or “100%” scaling, not “Fit to page”. Fit to page shrinks every square by 3–6%.
What is the most common graph paper size?
In the US, 1/4 inch squares (4 per inch), often called quad-ruled. Across Europe and much of the world, 5 mm squares.
What is the difference between graph paper and grid paper?
Nothing practical: both mean paper printed with a square grid. “Graph paper” is more common in the US for maths; “squared paper” is the usual British term.
Can I make graph paper with custom square sizes?
Yes. Type any square size from 1 mm to 50 mm (the inch equivalent is shown beside it), choose how often a bold line appears, and pick the line colour and weight.
Can I print my own graph paper?
Yes. Choose a size above, press Download PDF and print it on ordinary printer paper at Actual size / 100%. Any home inkjet or laser printer works; use a light line colour to save ink.
Is there a graph paper template in Word?
Word has no built-in graph paper, and grids drawn with Word tables drift in size when printed. A PDF keeps every square exact. If you need the grid inside a document, insert the downloaded PDF page as a picture or print the PDF and write on it.
Can you put graph paper in a printer?
Yes, pre-printed graph paper pads can usually be fed through a printer, but it is simpler to print the grid yourself on blank paper so the lines line up with whatever you add.
Will the PDF look sharp when printed?
Yes. The lines are vector paths, not an image, so they print crisp at any printer resolution and scale cleanly on tablets.
