Choosing a line height
The measurement is from the top line to the baseline. Young writers need room: many kindergarten classrooms start at 1 in, then shrink the lines each year as control improves, down to about 1/2 in by grade 3. Lowercase letters like a, c and o fill the space from the baseline to the dashed midline; tall letters like b, d and l reach the top line; tails on g, p and y drop into the gap below.

Questions
What is handwriting paper with a dotted line called?
It is often called primary writing paper or dotted-midline paper. The dotted line marks the height of lowercase letters.
Why is the bottom line red?
A coloured baseline gives children a clear “ground” to sit letters on. Change the colour in the settings if you prefer all blue.
Does this work for cursive practice?
Yes. The same three-line guide is used for cursive; choose 1/2 or 5/8 in for older students.
