Sizing a hex grid
The size setting is the length of one side. A regular hexagon measures twice its side from corner to corner and √3 × side (about 1.73×) from flat edge to flat edge. For 1 in hexes measured corner to corner, as many tabletop battle maps use, set a side of 12.7 mm.
Hexes are popular for maps because every neighbouring cell is the same distance away, unlike squares, where diagonal moves cover more ground.
Questions
What size hexes are used for tabletop games?
1 in hexes are the usual scale for miniatures. Wargames often use smaller hexes, 16 mm or so across flats.
Is hex paper useful for chemistry?
Yes. Small hexagons of about 3–4 mm help draw benzene rings and other cyclic structures neatly.
