How isometric drawing works
In an isometric projection the three axes of an object (width, depth and height) are drawn 120° apart, so all three are foreshortened by the same amount. On paper that means verticals stay vertical and the other two axes run at 30° above horizontal, left and right. Lengths along any axis stay true to scale, which is why engineers, product designers and pixel artists use it: you can measure straight off the drawing.
Triangle paper is the same lattice. Use it for tessellations, triangle-number patterns and geometry lessons on angles and area.
Questions
What angle are isometric lines?
30° from horizontal in both directions, plus verticals. Every triangle in the grid is equilateral, with 60° corners.
Is isometric paper the same as triangle graph paper?
Yes, they share the same lattice. “Triangle graph paper” is often printed with lines; “isometric dot paper” marks only the corners.
What size triangles should I choose?
For freehand 3D sketches 1/4 in or 1 cm triangles are comfortable. Go to 5 mm for detailed mechanical parts or dense game maps.
